Everyday, millions visit video websites for entertainment, education, and news. YouTube, Jumpcut, and tons of other similar sites offer a variety of content, but social and environmental issues are usually not the videos receiving all the views. Viral videos that reach millions are usually comedic, simple, unbelievable or powerful; and with some minor twists these videos could incorporate messages and inspiration to live green.
What will it take to make this change?
- Overnight change could come in the form of a viral video that receives millions of views that has positive environmental messages, spurring others to remix, or make similar videos that also receive many views.
- Ideally, people will begin to notice powerful, humorous, and educational snippets regarding the environment, and post this related content as well.
- This emphasis of social and environmental issues needs to be an integral part of our daily lives (maybe by committing to things like “Daily Pledge,” or just a viral video that makes us think) so each decision we make, including what we post or watch on the internet, can address positive social and environmental change.
- In addition to the desired changes above, a channel or user page can be created on YouTube that is dedicated to hosting videos about the environment and adding other similar content to their favorite videos.
- Much like the Daily Pledge blog can be a place to visit for all green news, a video channel can just focus on attention grabbing videos; it makes sense to cover all the bases on the internet when this idea can easily be implemented in a variety of places, so that the different mediums of this project can reach as wide an audience as possible.
- Again, this is free like the other parts of the project, usually those with minimal internet user skills can create and/or navigate these popular video pages with few problems.
Here is an example of the type of video that can make viewers think:
(This video of mine probably won’t go viral, but many now have the capability to make simple videos like this. I am just one person making this type of video, if these ideas were on our minds more often we could tap into millions of other people to do the same kind of work; and Youtube provides a great platform to reach the masses)
People who create or post videos want to receive many views; the environment is a hot issue right now, and there is a lot of potential to have ideas be seen if video websites are used for this purpose.
*To conclude the Daily Pledge; this idea would take very little investment, there is already a lot of work done here that can transfer to the actual implementation of the ideas. The biggest job would be maintaining the sites, but even then, the Daily Pledge is designed to have all others on the internet be involved in “maintaining” the different mediums with their contributions.
